Musician Application

Thank you for your interest in Hearts Need Art

Playing music at the hospital is different than any other gig you will play. Your audience is going through the most challenging experience they may ever face. As a musician, you play a vital role in the success of our mission to alleviate feelings of isolation and suffering in adult cancer patients and their families in the hospital. We are looking for musicians with these characteristics:

  • Artistic excellence
  • Versatility
  • Emotional maturity
  • Generous and open spirit
  • Eagerness to learn and grow

Once you fill out the form below, you will be contacted to schedule an audition and interview with the Hearts Need Art team.

Opportunities to Serve

Corridor Concert Series- Musicians volunteer their time to perform a 30-minute concert in the hallway of the cancer ward. Corridor Concerts typically occur in the afternoon on Saturdays.

Bedside Music- Musicians have the opportunity to play music at the bedside of patients at the hospital. Music selection is patient led so, musicians need to have a wide variety of music in their repertoire. Shifts last 3-5 hours during the day during the work week. Paid contracts are available to eligible musicians in our bedside music program.

Requirements to work directly with patients

Anyone who comes to the hospital is required to complete a brief orientation about patient privacy and safety which can often be done during the interview. Musicians that plan to come to the hospital more than twice a year must also complete the following:

  • Complete an application and background check form through the Methodist Hospital volunteer program.
  • Complete Methodist Hospital’s volunteer training program. The hospital offers volunteer training once or twice a month. It usually lasts 2-3 hours on a week day.
  • Immunizations
    • For the health and well-being of our volunteers and our patients, we require that all volunteers be immunized against Rubella (German measles) Rubeola (red measles). Volunteers will provide to the Employee Health department before volunteering all of the following:
      • Documentation of prior vaccination for MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) if born in 1957 or later.
      • Documentation of any previous TB skin testing within the last five years.
      • Documentation of Hepatitis B vaccine if you have received it.
      • Documentation of the VZV (Chicken pox) vaccine if you have received it
    • If you do not have documentation, blood work can be taken to check for immunity.
    • You will also need a TB test if you have not had one in the last year.

Applications are reviewed by Hearts Need Art as well as the oncology social workers to determine the best musicians to meet the needs of our patients. If you are not offered the gig, we hope you will join the ranks of other talented and successful musicians who become advocates for our arts-in-health program. Please refer other musicians, artists, and volunteers who you feel match our profile. We appreciate your support in finding the right fit for our mission.

Thank you!
