Art classes redirect focus away from stressful stimuli and into a relaxed, meditative state. Along with other therapeutic applications, art classes offer a welcome distraction for patients and family. Similar programs show a reduction in pain and use of pain medication while patients engage in a creative activity. Local artists teach a 1-2 hour art class in the waiting room the hospital to patients and caregivers. Art forms include Zentangle, mandala drawing, and other art forms. Classes are offered free of charge to participants. Hearts Need Art specially trains artists to safely and effectively conduct classes in a hospital setting.
